This device is not built off of traditional APIs, but instead operates off of web‑based automation, meaning that it has access (as of the most recent update) to a portal, aptly named Rabbit Hole, connecting accounts (Uber, Spotify, etc.) that the R1 can perform errands through a voice command with (set up a ride, play a song, order a meal, etc.)

5. Scandals & Security Issues
Origin Premises: Rabbit Inc. used to be Cyber Manufacturing Co. which used to be one of the blockchain/NFT projects known as GAMA. Refund claims (~1M) were made through investigation by creator Coffeezilla. Rabbit mentioned that the money was spent according to plans and NFTs were subsequently open sourced

Security Backdoor: A community reverse-engineering team found that the R1 software used API keys in the ElevenLabs, Azure, Yelp, and Google maps embedded in the Key. Rabbit would do this by rotating keys and revoking access

Privacy Control Problems: First of all, chat logs and pairing data between users were permanently recorded and it could not be removed, which sounds suspicious in case of lost devices. Later Rabbit added factory reset, restrained storing data and pairing defenses

6. The Bigger Picture 2025 AI Pals
Rabbit R1 is one of a number of efforts underway to develop specialized AI-focused hardware, an indication that fragmentation is becoming a reality in place of smartphone addiction

Humane AI Pin is a competitor, albeit a closed down one under the ballyhoo. Interestingly, the design icon Jony Ive has recently publicly criticized the R1 (and Ai Pin) as a very poor product with the founder at Rabbit welcoming his competition and being humbled of the experience. It is noted that Rabbit keeps updating the platform and makes it even better
The Verge
.
Nevertheless, a large number of people are still sceptical about the potential of such niche devices to replace the familiarity, convenience and power of a smartphone ecosystem.
7. Final: Innovation or Novelty?
Strengths Challenges
Voice-first, app-less interface with LAM Unique voice-first, app-less interface driven by LAM
Gorgeous retro style, tactile controls, Camera Rabbit Eye Tends to lag, Buggy performance, Low hardware specs
Configuration through Teach Mode and memorisation abilities Security and privacy issues careless storage and access to credentials and data tracking
Buy fast ? Embiggen finicky curiosity–critics complain that it has no goal and useful competitive advantage
Bottom line: Rabbit R1 is an ambitious exercise in an app-free, voice based, AI assistant. It offers creative features such as LAM-powered automation of tasks and hybrids of visual-voice input promising a potential future beyond smartphones. However, practically speaking, the majority of users are unlikely to upgrade their phones- or many are not convinced of its usefulness other than as a novelty. Whether it will succeed or not depends on whether it can continue refining the software, increase its reliability and validate that a unique AI companion, which lives in its own device, has value in our everyday lives.
